Eurovision Song Contest TOP-10

Exam. Great Britain

Great Britain

1)      Let's talk about Great Britain. What do you know about this country?
The United Kingdom is very small compared with many other countries in the world. It is situated on the British Isles and consists of four countries - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They are not independent countries, but‟countries in a country.” They share citizenship, the armed forces, money, parliament and the capital – London. Nevertheless, each of the countries has its own national flag, emblem, anthem, and public holidays.
The total area of the UK is 244,820 square kilometers. The population of Great Britain is about 63 million people.
The official name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  The head of the state is Queen Elizabeth II. The head of the government is Prime Minister David Cameron. Great Britain is a highly developed industrial country. The biggest industrial cities are London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
The climate of the country is mild and changeable. British people joke that they have no climate, they have weather.
The UK is a real attraction for tourists. Its landscape is extremely varied, so everyone will find something they will enjoy. There are grassy plains, beautiful wide and narrow valleys, velvet hills, thick forests, picturesque lakes and marvelous beaches.

2)      Would you like to visit Britain? Why?
If I could, I would like to visit Britain, for the simple reason that I have heard so much about it and I want to experience it for myself. I'd like to visit Great Britain one day to see all sightseeing I have read about, to look at Buckingham Palace, at Big Ben, to stay at Nelson's monument at Trafalgar Square and to go on double-decker bus. I'd like to see with my own eyes its famous places of interest and to improve my English.

3)  What would you like to ask a British teenager about Britain?
1.      What goods does the British industry produce?
2.     What traditions do British people follow?
3.     What is the population of your country?
4.     What are the main tourist attractions in your country?
5.     What are the Queen′s duties?

4) Give me a piece of advice on what sights to see in London.
London is the capital and the main tourist attraction for tourists of the country. The most important parts of London are the City, the East End, the West End and Westminster.
The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. Most banks and offices are situated there, including the Bank of England. Here you can visit St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London. St. Paul's Cathedral, the greatest English church, was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren. The Tower of London was a fortress, a palace, a prison and now it's a museum.
The West End is the richest part of London. Theatres, cinemas, museums, picture galleries and famous London parks are situated here. It′s a symbol of luxury.
Westminster is known for its governmental buildings. Here you can visit Westminster Abbey, where many famous English politicians, scientists, poets and writers are buried. One can see Buckingham Palace, the Queen's home and the House of Parliament here.
The East End is the poorest part of London. But it's famous for its sights. Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London. There you can see the famous Nelson's Column.
Madam Tussaud's Museum is famous for its waxworks statues of historical figures and celebrities.
The British Museum is also situated in the East End. It's one of the greatest museums of the world.
In conclusion I'd like to say that not only British sights are tourist attraction but also the people who live there.

5) What can you tell us about British character and behaviour?
The British are said to be polite and well-mannered people. Polite words or phrases such as “ Please", “Thank you" and “Excuse me” are used very often in Britain. Queuing is a national habit. At bus stops and cinemas, in shops, banks and post offices and in lots of other places you’ll have to join the queue and wait for your turn.
The British are said to be reserved. They don’t like displaying their emotions even in dangerous and tragic situations. But they are not unemotional. They control their emotions because they are taught that it is best not to show their feelings. The English hardly ever lie, but they don’t tell you the truth either. English people take everything with a sense of humour. You can easily offend them if you tell them they have no sense of humour.
Englishmen tend to be rather conservative, they love familiar things. They are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. Britain has more living symbols of its past than many other countries. Traditional uniforms are still preserved in Great Britain. There are also a lot of traditional ceremonies such as the "Changing of the Guard” at Buckingham Palace, “Trooping the Colour”, which is performed on the Queen’s official birthday, or the “Ceremony of the Keys”, that takes place every night at the Tower of London.
The English are practical and realistic, prudent and careful about almost everything. Everything is orderly: the lawns and the trees are neatly trimmed. Every Englishman is said to be a countryman at heart. The English countryside is many things to many people. It means peace and quiet, beauty, good health and no crime. Most Englishmen love gardens. Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies among Englishmen. They usually prefer a house with a garden to an apartment in a modern block of flats.
The British people are considered to be the world’s greatest tea drinkers. They drink it at meals and between meals. The English tea is usually strong and with milk.
The British love animals very much. Millions of families have “bird-tables” in their gardens. Nearly half of the households in Britain keep at least one pet. The English take good care of their pets. They are pet lovers.

6) They say it's important for a person to speak English nowadays because it is popular all over the world. What is your opinion?
I'm sure that it is very necessary and important to learn English now, because English is the language of the planet. 760 million people all over the world use it. Every year thousands of people from Belarus go to different countries as tourists or to work and they can't go without knowing the language of the country they are going to, but they can speak English, because it is an international language. A modern engineer or even a worker cannot work with imported instruments or machines if he is not able to read the instruction how to use it. Scientists, historians, diplomats are, as a rule, polyglots, because they need foreign languages for their work. If you want to be a stewardess or a pilot you must learn English, the language of international communication.

Exam. Belarus

Belarus

1) Let’s talk about our country. What can you tell me about our Motherland?
2) What parts of Belarus have you visited?
I was born in Belarus. Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe. It borders on Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Ukraine and Russia. The population is about 10 million people. The climate of the country is moderately continental. Belarus is a country of vast plains, green hills, big forests, rivers and lakes.
The largest lake is Lake Naroch. The longest rivers are the Nieman, the Western Dvina, the Prypyat and the Sozh. The largest and the most beautiful forests and national parks are Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Braslavsky and Naro- chansky National Parks which have rich flora and fauna.
Belarus is often called a land of bogs. They are in the Guiness Book of Records. Belarus has a long and interesting history. According to some documents Belarusian statehood started in the 10th century. On the 27th of July, 1991 our country proclaimed its sovereignty.
Today the Republic of Belarus is a sovereign, independent state with its own government and constitution. Belarus is a presidential republic, where the President is the head of the state, the guarantor of the Constitution and people's rights and freedoms. The symbols of Belarus are its national flag, national emblem and national anthem.
Belarus is a country of developed industry, education and culture. Belarus produces tractors, fridges, TV sets, watches and bicycles.
Our country is worth visiting. Belarus is an ancient country and there are many places of interest: monuments, museums and ancient towns.
Minsk, Nesvizh, Mir and Turov are the main tourist attractions.
Belarus is also a member of the UNO and many other international organizations. I am proud of our people, our courageous past and tolerant present.

3) What questions about Belarus do you expect to hear from a British teenager?
1.    What historic places are worth seeing in your country?
2.   What are the biggest industrial centres of Belarus?
3.   What problems is the country facing at present?
4.   What are the most popular holidays in Belarus?
5.   Do people of Belarus speak Belarusian?

4) What Belarusian sights would you advise a foreigner to visit?
Belarus is an ancient country with a long and interesting history. There are a lot of places of interest: ancient towns, monuments and museums. They are our national heritage. Among the main Belarusian treasures we can mention the cities of Nesvizh and Mir where you can see old castles.
The Radzivills' heritage consists of Nesvizh castle, the Farny Catherdral and parks. The castle is associated with mysterious legends about lost treasures and ghosts. 2 centuries ago there was one of the richest libraries and the richest collections of art and weapons. Now the castle is renovated and gathers tourists from abroad.
Musical festivals are held in Nesvizh castle every year.
Mir Castle near Grodno is built in a unique style. It was a fortress, a ghetto and now it's a museum. In Grodno you can visit ancient Kolozhskaya Orthodox Church and the Roman-Catholic Cathedral with the oldest European working clock. It's the masterpiece of the 17th century.
If you want to visit Belarusian museums you should go to Minsk, our capital. Minsk is a very old city with many faces. You will love its avenues, numerous parks and churches.
Minsk suffered greatly during World War II and many museums and monuments are connected with this war. The Belarusian History Museum will tell about the history of our country. The Art Museum has a rich collection of paintings and sculptures by old and modern masters.
If you want to get acquainted with Belarusian culture you may go to the Opera and Ballet Theatre or the Yanka Kupala National Theatre. But I'm sure that most tourists will remember the hospitality of Belarusian people.

5) They say that Belarus is at the crossroads of Europe. Explain why.
The Republic of Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe and borders on Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Ukraine and Russia. So, Belarus is situated at the crossroads of trade routes from west to east and from north to south. But the advantage of the country’s geographical position often turned into a disadvantage because Belarus was the arena of many wars and invasions.

Exam. Weather And Climate

Weather and Climate

1. Let’s talk about weather and climate. What is happening to weather and climate nowadays?
In my view, a person's life depends to a certain degree on the climatic conditions he lives in. English people say "There's no bad weather, there are bad clothes", but in reality bad weather influences our mood, emotions and even the physical state.
Climate isn’t the same as weather. Climate shows the average weather conditions over a long period of time. There are different types of climate: tropical, continental, polar, moderate, etc. Weather is the state of the atmosphere over a short period of time. Weather can be dry, wet, cold, hot, rainy, stormy, sunny, windy, cloudy, etc.
They say our climate is getting warmer and warmer and call it global warming. Environmentalists say that global warming is caused by emissions of certain gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which causes greenhouse effect. These changes in climate can be dangerous because it can lead to the melting of the Arctic Ice and the rise in the level of the World Ocean.
Unfortunately this will increase natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and storms that badly affect people's lives.
As for Belarusian climate, it's moderately continental with mild, humid winters, warm summers, damp autumns and springs. The average temperature in winter is about -5°C. The average temperature in summer is about +25°C. Belarusian spring and autumn can be very rainy. But every season is beautiful and pleasant in its way.

2.  Do you have a favourite season?
There are four seasons in a year: winter, spring, summer and autumn. All seasons are good in their own way. Winter, for example, is full of celebrations, presents and snow. Spring is the time of nature awakening and flower blooming. Autumn can be rainy and yet beautiful, full of multicolored leaves.
However, my favourite season is summer. I choose summer not only because my birthday is in June, but also because it's the time of holidays. Summer is the season when the sun shines brightly, the sky is rarely cloudy and the water in the sea becomes warm enough to swim. Even if it becomes too hot, you can always go for a walk in the shady woods. I also like summer because there are many berries, fruit and vegetables, not to mention numerous flowers on the fields. Among them are roses, dandelions, daisies, and other flowers. Sometimes the air in summer becomes stuffy, but occasional thunderstorms bring relief. After the thunderstorms the air becomes remarkably fresh and very often we can see the rainbow in the sky.
Summer is also the time when my family and I go on holiday to the seaside. It's a wonderful time, when we can have a rest from the intense academic year and relax. I think all children love summer because of long school holidays and I'm not an exception. I also enjoy my free time, playing with my friends, watching TV, and doing other fun activities. Nevertheless, I don't forget to do some useful reading from time to time.

3.  What questions would you ask a meteorologist?
1) Is it hard to be a meteorologist?
2) Why did you decide to become a meteorologist?
3) What do you do to forecast weather?
4) Do you think that observing nature can help you to forecast weather?
5) What is your favorite kind of weather?

4.  What can you advise a person who is weather dependent?
In my view a person's life depends to a certain degree on the weather and climate. The agriculture, the national cuisine, the clothes we wear, the types of houses we live in all these depend on the climate and weather. Moreover, our mood often depends on the weather. If the weather is sunny and bright, we feel happy and cheerful but if the weather is gloomy, a lot of people feel depressed. Every day many people listen to weather forecasts to make up their minds on what closes to wear and whether or not to take an umbrella with them.
I am not weather dependent but my mother is. When the weather is changing, she can have headaches, high blood pressure, weakness.
So, if you are a weather dependent person, I advise you to learn the weather forecast for the day and if it's negative for you, try to do something pleasant and relaxing to raise your mood.

5.  They say there’s no bad weather, there are bad clothes. What do you think about it?
Englishmen say "There is no bad weather, there are bad clothes", it means that they like all the seasons, all kinds of weather. Every season is good in its own way. Each person likes this or that season. It depends on his character, mood. They say that Pushkin liked autumn very much. This season is full of colours, freshness and light. The sky is blue, but sometimes grey clouds appear. The sun shines but it begins to hide behind the clouds. Its rays are not so warm. Autumn is full of vegetables and fruit, mushrooms and berries. There is nothing like Indian summer in autumn. As for me, I like to walk on the carpet of bright leaves listen to the songs of birds flying to warm countries, look at the nature. It is like a fairy-tale. It fades away and nothing can be done. Soon drizzling rains will begin and everything will be dull and sad. But still I like autumn. Winter in Minsk is long and severe with dark nights, strong winds and hard frosts. But sometimes you can see a quiet winter frosty day. It is snowing. Fluffy soft snowflakes are falling to the ground making a beautiful thick carpet. Going outdoors in such weather is pleasant. Many people go to the forests and enjoy sledging and skiing, playing snowballs and making a snowman. As for spring, people in Minsk wait for it and dream about it during long winter days. It comes late but suddenly. I don't like it because my town becomes grey. But spring is the beginning of new life. Nature awakens from its long winter sleep. The trees begin to bud and soon tiny green leaves will appear. Young green grass appears, fruit trees begin to blossom. Everything looks magic covered with green carpet. Nature looks full of promise. I like summer because we have holidays and I enjoy resting after school year. In my opinion every season is beautiful and attractive.
